Year of Music – Bedřich Smetana

FROM March 1 TO September 15, 2024, 10 AM–6 PM, MUSEUM TICKET OFFICE, OPEN EVERY DAY EXCEPT MONDAY

Two round anniversaries and a whole year dedicated to music. Nothing speaks more eloquently about the role of the composer Bedřich Smetana in Czech music. This year marks 200 years since his birth and 140 years since the composer's death. His work is considered the cornerstone of Czech musical culture.
The exhibition offers a unique insight into Smetana's life and work through a selection of interesting exhibits from our collections. Among the main attractions is the competition design for the monument to Bedřich Smetana by Karel Dvořák, originally intended for the city of Pardubice. Also remarkable is a letter written by Smetana to Dr. Leopold Hruša. In this personal letter, the composer mentions organizing a concert in Pardubice, which eventually took place. The exhibition also focuses on Bedřich Smetana's students, Leopold Hruša and Antonia Štěpánková-Goldsteinová, thus illustrating Smetana's influence on subsequent generations of Czech musicians. Visitors have a unique opportunity to view concert invitations, which testify to the popularity of Smetana's compositions not only in his time but also today.
