Exhibition of modern glass
Pardubice’s collection of modern Czech glass is internationally renowned and respected for its size, scope, and quality.
This new permanent exhibition in the south wing of the castle present originals works and designs by Czech glass artists dating from the late 1950s to the present day. Over 160 exhibits are displayed in two large halls, representing some of the most notable examples of glass art created anywhere on the international scene during this period. The works exemplify a variety of distinctive trends and artistic concepts – and they also enable us to trace the evolving creative paths taken by some of the most prominent Czech glass artists.
The architects Regina Loukotová and Klára Doleželová (from Prague’s GEM architectural studio) have created an imaginary version of a city, enabling viewers to engage their own fantastical imagination. The model includes “modern outskirts”, featuring skyscraper-like tower blocks, suspended glass elements “floating” above visitors, a dark passageway with niches containing glowing treasures, a “square” consisting of large and dramatic compositions, and a place of peace and quiet – a “church” incorporating a large-scale sculpture of a glass nativity scene. Walking through this cityscape, visitors are surrounded by the beauty and elegance of glass objects, whose appearance is transformed by the changing light when they are viewed from various angles.
This exhibition has been conceived to offer a powerful sensory experience, while also celebrating the immense creativity of Czech glass artists.
