Clothes as a sign of status

A look inside the wardrobes of rural East Bohemians

From March 3rd to September 3rd, 2023

Eastern Polabí, Orlické Mountains, and regions of the Czech Highlands - these are also areas, although less known, where rural inhabitants proudly wore their traditional costumes. Come and see their ornamentation and craftsmanship at the exhibition prepared in collaboration between the East Bohemia Museum in Pardubice and the Museum of Folk Costumes in Ostrov. You will discover the richness of the wardrobes of East Bohemian peasants and herdsmen, and learn how a tangled story can be told by a pair of shoes in the traditional costume of Mladá Boleslav. In addition to the amazement, you can take home a hand-decorated fabric bag or bookmark, using newly discovered patterns and techniques.

The exhibition is thematically divided into three areas. The first presents the contents of the wardrobes of rural inhabitants in the environment of the Czech lowlands, specifically in Eastern Polabí, the surroundings of Prague, and Boleslavsko. Interesting clothing accessories are also on display, such as beautifully decorated gold tinsel caps. The second part focuses on folk costumes used in the Orlické Mountains area. The experience culminates in the last part of the exhibition, which presents the folk costumes from the highlands through the costumes of Litomyšl, Polička, or Rychnov nad Kněžnou.
