From a castle to a chateau: the Pernštejns’ residence through the generations

This tour route reveals how the Pernštejns’ main residence was transformed from a moated Gothic castle to a Renaissance chateau. The rebuilding work, carried out in a late Gothic style, was begun in 1491 by the Moravian magnate William (Vilém) of Pernštejn, who created a fortress surrounded by an impressive system of fortifications.

William’s sons Vojtěch and Jan continued the extensive rebuilding of the castle in a style influenced by the Italian Renaissance.

On this tour you will see a range of structural and architectural features revealing how the Pernštejns’ residence evolved over the generations to become a unique structure incorporating elements of both a fortified castle and a comfortable chateau-type residence.
