Housing estates, clusters of apartment buildings complemented by facilities for various services, significantly reshaped the appearance of cities and the entire country in the second half of the 20th century. The concept of housing estates can be traced back to 19th-century ideas of garden cities. Modernist architects and urban planners reimagined these as rationally designed "machines for living." In the context of post-war reconstruction, such complexes began to emerge across Europe.
Under socialism, thousands of apartments were built in Pardubice, providing homes for tens of thousands of people. A large portion of these new dwellings was constructed on housing estates. This exhibition uses Pardubice as a case study to examine why and how housing estates were developed, and most importantly, what life was like for their residents. Our guides on this journey are the residents themselves, whose memories form the core of this narrative.
